Meet the Team Behind Golden Mill Honey

Hi, we’re Matthew and Kirsty — husband and wife, beekeepers, and the people behind Golden Mill Honey.

What began as a simple curiosity about bees quickly turned into a full-blown obsession (the bees seem to have that effect on people). Before long, a few hives became many more, and what started as a hobby grew into a little business we’re proud to call our own.

Like many small businesses, Golden Mill Honey fits around our everyday lives. When we’re not busy with our day jobs, you’ll usually find us checking hives, caring for our bees, harvesting honey, or planning where to put the next colony. It’s a labour of love that takes up a fair bit of our spare time — but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Every jar of Golden Mill Honey comes from the care and attention we put into our hives, and we’re passionate about producing honey that’s as natural, local, and delicious as possible.

We’re incredibly grateful to share what we love with our customers and to be part of a community that values real honey, responsible beekeeping, and a little bit of nature’s hard work.

Matthew Davison

Head Beekeeper

I’m usually the one in the bee suit, spending my spare time checking hives and looking after the bees. I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors, so beekeeping was a natural hobby to get stuck into. Whether I’m inspecting colonies, building bits and pieces for the apiary, dealing with the occasional swarm, or harvesting honey, there’s always something to keep me busy.

What started as an interest in bees soon turned into a bit of an obsession. I’m always learning something new, and no two days in the apiary are ever quite the same. Most of my time is spent making sure the bees are healthy and have everything they need, while trying to stay on their good side and avoid getting stung too often.

I’m keen to keep building my knowledge and improving my beekeeping skills. Whether that’s through hands-on experience in the apiary, learning from other beekeepers, or working towards new beekeeping qualifications and certificates, there’s always more to learn when it comes to bees.

Everything Else

I’m usually the one behind the scenes, helping keep everything ticking along while Matthew is out with the bees. From answering messages and packing orders to designing labels, rolling our beeswax candles, updating the website, and looking after our social media pages, there’s always something to do.

I love the creative side of the business and enjoy coming up with new ideas for products, labels, and gifts. More often than not, you’ll find me surrounded by jars, labels, and packing boxes. I’ve also somehow become the person responsible for telling Matthew that we probably don’t need anymore equipment just yet… although I’m not sure he listens!

While Matthew is definitely the main beekeeper, I’m learning more about bees all the time and helping out at the apiaries whenever I can. I also love harvest time. It’s one of the busiest parts of the year, but seeing all the honey we’ve worked hard for finally ready to be jarred makes it all worthwhile.

I love harvest time. It’s one of the busiest times of the year, but seeing the honey come out of the extractor and knowing it’s ready to be jarred up makes all the hard work worthwhile. It’s messy, sticky, and usually means a very long day, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’ve also discovered that I really enjoy doing markets. We’ve only done one so far, but I loved meeting customers and chatting about our honey. It also made me realise I know a lot more about bees and beekeeping than I thought! I’m looking forward to doing more markets and meeting plenty more people along the way.

One of the things I enjoy most is knowing that every order is going to someone who has chosen to support our small business. Whether I’m packing a jar of honey, rolling a batch of candles, sharing updates online, or chatting to customers at a market, I like adding those little finishing touches that make our business feel personal.

Thanks for following along on our beekeeping adventure and supporting our small business.
