November in the apiary

🐝 Ever wonder what the bees are up to this time of year here in England?

As autumn fades and the chill sets in, honeybees across the UK are settling down for the winter months. With few flowers left to forage from, the colony’s focus shifts from gathering nectar to survival.

Inside the hive, the bees form a dense cluster around their queen, vibrating their wing muscles to generate heat and keep the temperature stable — often around 35°C in the centre of the cluster. They rely on the honey and pollen they stored through summer and autumn to keep their energy up until spring.

The queen stops laying eggs, activity slows right down, and the bees conserve their strength for the warmer days ahead — when the first snowdrops and willow catkins appear, and life begins buzzing again.
